Six home owners in Snowdonia were recently given free energy consultations for their ‘hard to treat’ properties from expert Peter Draper at Rounded Developments.
A huge proportion of homes in the Snowdonia National Park are made of solid stone, making common energy saving techniques difficult and sometimes even counterproductive. Profiad Ni ran a prize draw so local householders could receive bespoke advice to make informed decisions about improving and maintaining their homes.
Bethan Gritten, Profiad Ni’s manager said:
“Profiad Ni ran a seminar earlier this year on the advantages and disadvantages of external insulation and one of the main learning points was that old stone houses were designed to breath, so treating them with non-breathable insulation can lead to problems like damp.
The people who built these houses knew what they were doing – they had a truly sustainable approach using traditional building methods and natural local materials. These buildings are part of the landscape we love. People need expert advice to learn how to maintain old homes and bring them to modern standards without causing further problems and losing valuable heritage.
The great thing about this project was that, although we were only able to fund a handful of consultations, they have already led to significant and sensible changes in these homes.”
Llinos Griffin of Gwefus filmed three of the consultations so others can benefit from Peter’s advice. The highlights can be seen below. Llinos – who was previously part of The Apprentice team – saw real potential in sharing this information more widely by creating more films about the issues and Gwefus, Profiad Ni and Rounded Developments have now teamed up on a further film project. “Our meeting with Peter was so worthwhile. He is very well informed about the options for making living more comfortable in an old stone house like ours. He also gave us technical advice on the building methods for our stone barn conversion. The visit totally surpassed expectations!”
“We found the consultation very interesting and informative. Peter discussed a lot of things about the structure of our house which we were previously unaware of. As a result we are having work done, including insulating under the floor to prevent winter drafts and proper roof insulation.”
“My home energy consultation was really informative and practical. Everything from the balance of adequate ventilation and insulation, water saving, the merits of different heating systems, to the design of living space was discussed in detail. I then received a comprehensive list by email of recommendations that I will implement at my property in the near future.”
